# When you cannot check in

Every carer has weeks where they cannot be there. Planning for those in advance is far easier than improvising once one arrives.

## Decide what must not lapse

Usually there are only two or three things: eating and drinking, a human voice each day, and someone noticing if something is wrong. Everything else can pause for a fortnight.

Write those down and cover them specifically rather than trying to replicate everything you normally do.

## Line up a second pair of hands

- A neighbour with a key, your number, and a clear ask — not just goodwill.
- A friend or relative taking the daily call while you are away.
- A short block of paid care if the fortnight is genuinely uncovered.
- Where relevant, respite care arranged well in advance rather than at the last minute.

## Keep the rhythm running

Scheduled reminders keep going whether or not you are able to. The routine does not collapse just because you are on a plane, and picking it back up afterwards is much simpler than rebuilding it.

If you add a second family member to the account, they can see whether reminders were confirmed while you are away.

## Set the escalation rule before you go

Agree in advance who calls the GP, at what point, and who has the front door key. An escalation plan written on a Sunday afternoon is worth ten frantic phone calls on a Thursday night.

## The wider picture

3.9 million

people aged 65 and over in the UK live alone, around a third of that age group.

5.0 million

people in England and Wales provide unpaid care, according to the 2021 Census.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.

## Questions carers ask

## Set the first reminder tonight

It takes about five minutes, costs nothing to start, and the person you care for has nothing to install.
