Plain answer

# What is a dementia clock?

It is a clock that answers in words instead of numbers. That single design decision is the whole idea, and it is why families keep recommending them to each other.

## The short version

A dementia clock — sometimes sold as a day clock, orientation clock or calendar clock — shows the weekday, the date and the part of the day in large plain text. A typical display reads something like: Tuesday, 14 January, Afternoon.

There is no alarm to set, no menu to get lost in and usually nothing on the front to press. It sits on a sideboard or a bedside table and does one job continuously.

## Why the wording matters more than the screen

Reading an ordinary clock involves several steps at once: notice the numbers, convert them, decide which half of the day it is, then work out what that implies. Any of those steps can become effortful, and often the first to go is the last one.

Writing 'Tuesday afternoon' removes all of it. You are not being tested; you are being told. That is the difference between a clock that is technically visible and a clock that actually helps.

## The moments it earns its money

- Waking in the dark and needing to know whether the day has started.
- After an afternoon nap, when the day appears to have reset.
- Winter, when four o'clock and seven o'clock look identical through a window.
- Days spent mostly indoors, where there are no outside cues at all.

## What it deliberately does not do

A dementia clock has no opinion about your week. It cannot mention that today is the day the chiropodist comes, cannot suggest a glass of water at eleven, and cannot let you know it was read. It is a reference, not a nudge.

That is not a flaw. It is simply the boundary of what a clock is, and it is worth knowing before you expect more from it than it can give.

## If you need the nudge as well

You Care Reminders sends short, kindly worded messages at times you choose — as a call, a text or a phone alert — with one button to tap so you can see it arrived. Many families run both: the clock for orientation, us for the two or three moments a day that matter.

## The wider picture

around 982,000

people are estimated to be living with dementia in the UK.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service or an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. In an emergency, call 999.
