Meals

# When meals quietly stop happening

Cooking for one is a chore at any age. Add tiredness, a smaller appetite and nobody to eat with, and lunch simply stops occurring.

## The reasons, in rough order of frequency

- No one to eat with, so the meal loses its point.
- Effort: shopping, standing to cook, then washing up.
- Taste and smell fading, which makes food less rewarding.
- Dental pain or ill-fitting dentures, rarely mentioned unprompted.
- Low mood, which flattens appetite before it shows anywhere else.
- Simply losing track of the time of day.

## The signs worth acting on

Clothes and rings becoming loose, a fridge with the same items in it a week later, bread going mouldy, bins with no food waste. Weight loss in later life is never something to watch and wait on.

Unintentional weight loss should always go to the GP. It can be entirely fixable, and it can also be the first sign of something that needs finding.

## Making eating easier

- Small, frequent and calorie-dense beats three formal meals.
- Keep three no-cook standbys in the house at all times.
- A shared meal once or twice a week, even over a video call.
- Meals on wheels or a local lunch club, both still widely available in the UK.
- A prompt at the times meals should be happening, phrased as an invitation rather than an instruction.

## Where reminders help

A short message at half twelve — naming the food that is actually in the fridge — turns an abstract intention into something concrete. You Care Reminders lets you set that once, and tells you when it has been confirmed.

## The wider picture

3.9 million

people aged 65 and over in the UK live alone, around a third of that age group.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.
