Comparison

# Personal alarms and check-ins are not the same thing

They are often compared as if you have to choose. You do not. One is insurance against the worst hour of the year; the other is company through three hundred ordinary days.

## What a personal alarm is for

A pendant or wrist alarm exists for one situation: something has gone wrong and help is needed now. Pressing it reaches a monitoring centre, who speak to the person and call a nominated contact or the emergency services.

If there is any history of falls, or a condition where a sudden turn is plausible, this is the first thing to arrange. Nothing else on this page substitutes for it.

## What it cannot do

- It does nothing at all unless it is worn and pressed.
- It has no view of the ordinary day — meals, drinks, calls, routine.
- It cannot help with orientation, confusion or loneliness.
- It usually carries a monthly monitoring fee whether or not it is ever used, which is exactly how insurance works.

## What a check-in reminder is for

A check-in is the opposite shape. It arrives on a normal Tuesday, says something short and specific in your words, and gives one button to tap. Over a week you can see how the days are going without ringing three times to find out.

It reduces the low-grade worry that most carers carry, and it takes nothing from the person's independence — there is no app to learn and nothing to wear.

## How families combine them

Alarm for emergencies, arranged through the council or a provider. Check-ins for the day: a drink in the afternoon, a call with a grandchild at four, the evening routine. Neither one pretends to be the other, and together they cover both ends.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool. It is not a personal alarm, not a monitoring service and it cannot detect falls or summon help. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. In an emergency, call 999. For alarms and telecare, contact your council's adult social care team or a monitored provider.

## Set the first reminder tonight

It takes about five minutes, costs nothing to start, and the person you care for has nothing to install.
