Sight loss

# When reminders can't be read

Most reminder tools assume a screen and good eyesight. For someone with macular degeneration or cataracts, that assumption quietly excludes them from all of it.

Short answer

Use spoken reminders rather than written ones. Sound, contrast and consistent placement do the work that print used to, and a certificate of vision impairment unlocks practical local support.

## Why written reminders stop working

Notes, whiteboards and phone screens all rely on being read. When central vision goes, none of them do their job, and the failure looks like forgetfulness rather than sight loss.

Many people conceal how much sight they have lost. If notes are being ignored, sight is worth checking before memory.

## What works instead

- Spoken reminders — a voice call or a message read aloud.
- Talking clocks and talking watches, widely available and inexpensive.
- Strong colour contrast: dark cup on a pale surface, pale plate with dark food.
- Much brighter task lighting, particularly in the kitchen and on stairs.
- Everything kept in the same place, every time.

## Get the formal support

An optometrist or eye clinic can arrange a certificate of vision impairment, which opens access to a council sight-loss assessment, equipment and sometimes a rehabilitation officer. The RNIB helpline is a good first call.

Free NHS sight tests apply to everyone over sixty, and cataract surgery remains one of the most transformative operations available.

## How our reminders are delivered

You Care Reminders sends short spoken messages as well as texts, so they can be heard rather than read. Nothing needs to be installed on their side and there is no screen to navigate.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.

It takes about five minutes, costs nothing to start, and the person you care for has nothing to install.
