# Live-in care, or a bit more support?

Live-in care is the right answer for some households and a large, expensive overcorrection for others. The deciding factor is what is actually going wrong.

## What live-in care solves well

Night-time needs, frequent personal care, unsafe mobility, and the sort of continuous presence that no amount of scheduling replaces. If any of those describe your situation, lighter options will not stretch to cover it.

It also keeps someone in their own home and their own bed, which matters enormously to many people.

## What it costs, in more than money

-   A stranger living in the house, permanently, with a spare room given over. 
-   Cost broadly comparable with residential care in many parts of the UK. 
-   Continuity risks when a carer is off, ill or replaced. 
-   A real loss of privacy, which some people never fully accept. 

## When lighter support is enough

If the actual problems are missed meals, forgotten appointments, no company and a family that worries, then live-in care is solving a different problem at ten times the price.

A few care visits a week, a lunch club, and daily prompts often address that list completely.

## How to decide

Write out what went wrong over the last month, item by item. Then mark which items need a person physically present. If most do not, start lighter and review in three months.
