Practical guide

# Caring for a parent who lives alone

Most care is not dramatic. It is a set of small arrangements that mean an ordinary week works, and that a bad day gets noticed quickly.

Short answer

Build four things: a way to know each day is alright, a safety net if it is not, practical support for the tasks that have got hard, and something in the diary that is not care.

01

## Set up a daily signal

A call, a neighbour, or a confirmed daily message — anything that tells you the day started normally. Without one, every unanswered phone becomes a crisis, and you cannot sustain that.

02

## Put a safety net underneath

- A key safe, so help can get in.
- A personal alarm or telecare if falls are a real risk.
- A neighbour with your phone number, and you with theirs.
- Smoke alarms tested — the fire service does free home safety visits for older residents.

03

## Take the hard tasks off the list

Online food deliveries, a cleaner, a gardener, direct debits for bills, and a pharmacy delivery service remove more risk per pound than almost anything else. Ask the council about an occupational therapy assessment for equipment and adaptations.

04

## Claim what they are entitled to

Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit, council tax reductions and the Warm Home Discount are all commonly unclaimed. Age UK runs free benefits checks and it is worth an afternoon.

05

## Protect yourself too

A carer's assessment is your legal right, and it can unlock respite and practical support. Burnout in the person providing the care is the most common reason arrangements collapse.

## The wider picture

3.9 million

people aged 65 and over in the UK live alone, around a third of that age group.

5.0 million

people in England and Wales provide unpaid care, according to the 2021 Census.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.

## Questions carers ask

### How often should I visit?

### What should I check when I visit?

### How do I do this from far away?

## Set the first reminder tonight

It takes about five minutes, costs nothing to start, and the person you care for has nothing to install.
