# Carer burnout, spotted early

Burnout does not announce itself. It arrives as a short temper, broken sleep and a slow narrowing of your life until caring is all that is left in it.

## The early signs

- Waking at three or four and running through everything you have not done.
- Resentment that surprises you, followed immediately by guilt.
- Letting your own appointments slide while managing everyone else's.
- Losing patience over things that would not have bothered you a year ago.
- Cancelling your own plans by reflex, without even weighing it up.
- Feeling that no one else could possibly do it properly.

## Why carers miss it in themselves

The load increases gradually, so each week feels only slightly harder than the last. There is rarely a moment that obviously marks the point where it became too much.

Most unpaid carers also do not think of themselves as carers at all — they are simply a daughter, a husband, a neighbour — so none of the support aimed at carers feels like it is meant for them.

## Practical steps that actually reduce the load

- Request a carer's assessment from the council. It is your legal right and it is free.
- Check eligibility for Carer's Allowance and for Attendance Allowance for the person you care for.
- Book respite before you need it. Waiting lists are real.
- Hand over one entire category of task to someone else, not a scattering of small ones.
- Automate the repeating prompts so they no longer live in your head.

## Taking things out of your head

A large part of the exhaustion is mental load: remembering the drink, the call, the appointment, at the right moment, every day. Moving those to scheduled reminders is a small change that reliably frees up a surprising amount of headspace.

## The wider picture

5.0 million

people in England and Wales provide unpaid care, according to the 2021 Census.

a legal right

every unpaid carer in England can ask their council for a carer's assessment, whatever their income or savings.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.

## Questions carers ask
