Deciding

# Can they still manage on their own?

It is rarely a single moment. It is a slow accumulation of small worries that nobody has written down, which is why the decision feels impossible.

Short answer

Judge it on specific abilities, not on age or on your anxiety. If they can eat, drink, keep warm, stay reasonably clean, manage the door and get help when needed, living alone is usually workable with support.

## Look at these, honestly

- Eating and drinking: is food being eaten, is weight steady, is the fridge full of out-of-date food?
- Warmth and bills: is the heating on, is post being opened, are bills being paid?
- Washing and dressing: has personal care slipped noticeably?
- Safety: any burnt pans, any unexplained bruises, any falls not mentioned?
- Getting help: could they raise the alarm if something happened tonight?

## Get an assessment before you decide

A care needs assessment from the council is free, does not depend on savings, and produces an independent view. It also opens the door to reablement, equipment and home adaptations that often change the answer entirely.

A GP review is worth arranging at the same time — several reversible things, including infection, low thyroid, hearing loss and depression, look very like decline.

## What can be added before moving

Home care visits, a key safe, telecare, grab rails, a stairlift, meal deliveries, a daily check-in, and a neighbour with a phone number all buy time. Many families discover the alternative to moving was simply never priced up.

## Whose decision is it

An adult with capacity has the right to make choices others consider unwise, including staying at home. Capacity is decision-specific and is assessed, not assumed. If you believe capacity is genuinely lacking, speak to the GP and to the council's adult social care team.

## The wider picture

3.9 million

people aged 65 and over in the UK live alone, around a third of that age group.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.

It takes about five minutes, costs nothing to start, and the person you care for has nothing to install.
