# Shared calendar or reminder service?

A shared family calendar solves the coordination problem beautifully. It just solves it for the wrong person.

Short answer

A shared calendar organises the family. A reminder service reaches the person being cared for, on a device they already use, and tells you whether it landed. Most families need both, for different sides of the same arrangement.

## What a shared calendar is good for

- Appointments, visits and who is covering which day.
- Everyone sees the same thing without a group chat.
- Free, and most people already have one.
- Good for planning weeks ahead.

## Where it stops

The older person is almost never in the calendar. They do not have the app, or the account, or the habit — so everything in it stays on the family's side.

Calendars also assume everything is an event. Daily repeating gentle prompts clutter a calendar badly and get switched off.

## What a reminder service does instead

It delivers to them, by text, voice or notification, with nothing to install if they use an ordinary phone. Confirmation comes back so the family knows what happened without ringing to check.

It is built around daily repetition rather than one-off events, which is what most care actually consists of.

## Running both

Keep the calendar for family logistics and appointments. Use reminders for the daily rhythm. The two rarely overlap, and trying to make one do both usually ends with the calendar being ignored.

## Being straight with you

You Care Reminders is a non-medical wellness tool, not a monitoring service and not an alarm. Delivery is best effort rather than guaranteed, and it must not be used for medication reminders. If you are worried about someone's health, speak to their GP; in an emergency, call 999.

## Questions carers ask
