# What good care looks like, from a distance

By The You Care team

Distance changes the shape of caring. You can't drop in for a cup of tea on the way home from work. You can't notice that the milk has gone off, or that the heating hasn't been turned on, or that today is a sad sort of day.

But distance does not make care impossible. It only asks more of our attention.

## Build a quiet network

The strongest long-distance care arrangements we see are never one person doing everything. They are a soft web — a neighbour who pops in on Wednesdays, a cousin who calls on Sundays, a grocery delivery on Fridays, and a few gentle prompts running quietly in the background.

> I'm in Edinburgh and Dad's in Devon. We can't be there in person. So we're there in small ways, all the time.

## Replace urgency with rhythm

Caregivers who live far away often describe being constantly braced for the phone to ring. A regular rhythm of small confirmations — the morning reminder gently acknowledged, the evening message read — replaces that anxious waiting with something quieter. Not certainty, exactly. But trust.

## And when you can be there, be fully there

When the visits do happen, leave the laptop closed. The work of long-distance care, done well in the in-between weeks, is what makes the in-person time feel like time, not triage.
