# How to talk to a parent about accepting help

By The You Care team

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles into a family when a child first notices their parent slowing down. It is rarely dramatic. It is a missed appointment. A bottle of pills left unopened. A repeated story.

What follows is often a difficult conversation, made harder by love. Here are a few things we've learned from the families we work with.

## Lead with the relationship, not the worry

Begin from the place that already exists between you — shared memories, in-jokes, a Sunday lunch. Let the conversation grow out of warmth rather than concern. The moment a parent feels assessed, the door tends to close.

> I stopped saying 'I'm worried about you'. I started saying 'I miss our chats' — and everything changed.

## Offer something small

Big offers ('move in with us', 'let's get a carer') often feel like a loss of independence. Small offers — a regular text, a weekly walk, a kind reminder at lunchtime — feel like company. Most parents will accept the small thing today and the bigger thing later.

## Let them keep the lead

Whatever you put in place, let your parent shape it. Ask which time of day suits them. Ask what words feel right. The point is not to manage them. The point is to walk beside them, a little more closely than before.

Why a quiet midday message can mean more to an older parent than a long phone call — and how to build a routine that feels like care, not surveillance.

    ### What good care looks like, from a distance

Living far from an ageing parent is one of the hardest parts of modern family life. A few thoughts on staying close — without hovering.
