# SMS vs app reminders for older adults: what actually gets read

By The You Care team

One of the most useful questions any adult child can ask before setting up a reminder system for an older parent is a small one: on your parent's phone, right now, what actually gets read?

For most older adults in the UK, the honest answer is: text messages. Not app notifications. Not group chats. Not emails. A text on the lock screen, in a font they can read, from a name they know.

## Why SMS reaches older adults so well

SMS has three quiet superpowers for an older phone user. It doesn't require an app to be open. It doesn't require a login. And it doesn't disappear behind a red badge that has to be tapped in the right place. The message arrives. The phone chimes. The words are there. That is the whole flow.

## Where apps still make sense

Apps work beautifully for the caregiver — the person setting the reminders, adjusting the times, checking in on what went out. For the older parent receiving the reminders, though, an app you have to open is one step too many on most days. This is why most families end up on a mixed setup: an app for you, plain SMS for them.

## Push notifications: the middle ground

If your parent is comfortable with a smartphone and happy to install an app, push notifications on the lock screen can work well too. The key word is 'lock screen' — a reminder that requires unlocking and hunting is one that gets missed. This is why we default to sending push through the phone's built-in notification tray, not inside a separate app.

## What to plan for on a basic phone

If mum or dad is on a basic phone — a Doro, an older iPhone, a Nokia — SMS is the entire strategy. Send short messages. Send them at consistent times. Sign them with a name they recognise on the sender line, not a number. On most UK carriers you can use an alphanumeric sender ID, so 'You Care' shows up in place of a mobile number.

> Dad doesn't have the app. He gets the text. That is the whole system. And it works.

## The right question isn't which is better

It's which one your parent will actually read on a wet Tuesday in February without thinking about it. For most families, the answer is SMS for the parent and an app for the caregiver. Design around the phone that will receive the message, not the phone you happen to like.

If you're setting up your first two daily prompts, our piece on daily check-in messages for elderly parents has a starter set you can send straight from your phone tonight.
