# Small rituals, big comfort

By The You Care team

Most of the caregivers we speak to don't worry about the big things. They worry about the in-between hours — the long, quiet stretch of an afternoon when no one has called and the kettle has gone cold twice.

It's in those hours that small rituals matter most. A short note at eleven. A reminder to take a walk to the garden gate. A line that simply says, 'thinking of you, love.' These tiny prompts are not about control. They are about presence.

## Routine is its own kind of company

Older adults living alone often describe the day as feeling shapeless. A kind, predictable rhythm — even one made of two or three messages — restores a sense of structure. They know when to expect a word, and that small knowing changes the whole shape of the day.

> Mum doesn't always reply, but she always reads them. She told me last week she looks forward to the lunchtime one.

## Start with two

We often suggest beginning with just two reminders: one in the morning, one in the early evening. Keep the wording warm and personal — the way you would speak in person. You can always add more once the rhythm feels right.
