# Ten quiet signs your elderly parent needs a little more support

By The You Care team

The signs an elderly parent needs more support rarely announce themselves. There is no single conversation where mum says she's struggling. Instead there is a slow drift — a fortnight of unopened post, a slightly emptier fridge, the same cardigan over three FaceTime calls. Most adult children spot it in hindsight.

This is a short, honest checklist of what to look for. Not to diagnose anything. Just to notice earlier, so the conversation about a little more help can happen while it is still a conversation and not a crisis.

## 1\. The post is piling up

Not junk mail — the letters that used to get opened. A stack on the hall table is often the first sign that day-to-day admin has become tiring.

## 2\. The fridge tells a story

Half a lettuce from last week. Milk pushed to the back. A freezer full of the same three meals. Appetite and shopping both start to shrink before anyone mentions it.

## 3\. The same clothes turn up in every video call

Getting dressed is a small daily achievement. When the wardrobe narrows to one comfortable outfit, it is worth a gentle note.

## 4\. Phone calls get shorter

Not because there is less to say — because keeping up a conversation is more tiring than it used to be. A parent who used to talk for forty minutes and now stops at ten is telling you something.

## 5\. The house feels a little less looked after

Dust on the sideboard. A plant that has gone. The bathroom mat pushed sideways. None of it is serious on its own. All of it together is.

## 6\. Bills or prescriptions are late

Missed repeat prescriptions, unopened bills, a bank letter that has been on the counter for a month. This is often the first thing a GP will ask about too.

## 7\. They mention feeling 'a bit tired' more often

'A bit tired' is the phrase older parents use when they don't want to worry you. Listen for it. It usually means something has shifted.

## 8\. The days blur together

'What day is it, love?' asked lightly on a Tuesday. Occasional confusion about the day of the week is common; a pattern is worth naming.

## 9\. They stop mentioning friends

The friend who used to be in every story goes quiet in conversation. Social worlds contract before physical ones do.

## 10\. Something in the voice on Sunday

This is the one no one writes down but every adult child knows. A slightly flatter hello. A softer laugh. Trust it.

> Nothing was wrong, exactly. It was that six small things were quieter than they used to be. That was the sign.

## What to do when you notice

You don't need a plan yet. Start with rhythm — a gentle daily message, a proper phone call on a set day. Rhythm alone will tell you more in a fortnight than a checklist ever will. If the drift continues, that's when you talk about a cleaner, a befriender, or a chat with the GP.

Our piece on helping a lonely parent without moving in walks through the next step in more detail.
