It shows up in slightly shorter phone calls, in the same story told twice on a Sunday, in a slower voice on a Wednesday afternoon. And the guilt that comes with noticing it, when you live an hour or three away, is heavy. The good news is that helping a lonely elderly parent almost never means moving in — or moving them out. It usually means adding two or three small, dependable presences to their week, and holding your own visits lightly on top. ## Start with structure, not activities The first thing loneliness eats is the shape of the day. A lonely week feels shapeless: nothing to lean against. Before you suggest a lunch club or a befriender, add rhythm. A short message at eleven. A phone call every Wednesday at four. A visit on the last Sunday of the month. Structure is oxygen. ## Add one social anchor a week One thing outside the house, once a week, is usually enough to shift a whole mood. A coffee morning at the church hall. The library reading group. A cleaner who stays for a cuppa. It doesn't have to be dramatic. It has to be reliable. ## Say their name in messages Loneliness has a specific texture: no one has used your name today. A short 'thinking of you, mum' does more than it seems to. If your parent prefers a nickname or a first name, use that. The word matters. > The Age UK befriender came for an hour on Thursdays. It was one hour. It changed the whole week. ## Practical routes worth knowing In the UK, Age UK's telephone befriending service, the Silver Line (0800 4 70 80 90), and local Good Neighbour schemes can all be requested in an afternoon. They are free. They are quietly excellent. ## Protect the calls from becoming admin This is where automated daily prompts earn their keep. If the eleven o'clock 'kettle on?' handles the reassurance, your phone calls stop being about hydration and start being about the neighbour's dog again. That is the call your parent actually wants. ## And accept the ache Loneliness in a parent is not something you fix. It is something you soften. If, by the end of a season, your parent has a shape to their week and two warm voices in it, you have done a lot — even from where you are.
