# What to say in a daily check-in message to an elderly parent

By The You Care team

There is a specific pause that happens when you sit down to write a daily check-in message to an elderly parent. You want it to sound warm, not clinical. You want it to nudge without pressuring. You want it, mostly, to sound like you.

Here is a small catalogue of check-in messages that families we work with have found land well — organised by the three moments in the day when a short text does the most quiet work.

## Morning messages: about starting the day

'Good morning, love. Kettle on?' 'Slow start today, mum. No rush.' 'Sun's out here. Hope it's the same with you.' 'A little walk to the door, whenever you're ready.' 'Thinking of you first thing.'

## Midday messages: about food, water, and a small task

'Glass of water, love, when you get a moment.' 'Something small for lunch — even a biscuit counts.' 'Time for a cuppa?' 'Have a look at the garden for me.' 'Radio 4 is on in your kitchen, I hope.'

## Evening messages: about winding down

'Curtains drawn yet, mum?' 'Ten minutes with a book, love.' 'Warm socks. Warm tea. That's the whole plan.' 'I'll ring properly tomorrow. Sleep well.' 'Night, love. All my love.'

## The four things to leave out

Don't ask a question that needs answering. 'Did you eat?' turns a warm nudge into a test. Say 'a bit of lunch, whenever you fancy' instead.

Don't stack tasks. One prompt per message. 'Water, a walk, and a call to your sister' reads as a list and lands as pressure.

Don't apologise for the message. 'Sorry to keep bothering you' teaches your parent that the message is a bother, when it isn't.

Don't sign off formally. No 'regards'. A simple 'love, me' or 'x' keeps it in the register of a note, not a memo.

> The best one dad ever got said just: 'A slow morning, no rush.' He kept it on the phone for weeks.

## Sending them without living on your phone

The trick most families land on eventually is to write the messages once, in a warm hour on a Sunday, and let something else send them at the right time each day. That way the words are yours — the timing just happens.

Our piece on how to remind an elderly parent without nagging goes into the tone in more depth if you want to think about it further.
